BY WAY OF EXPLANATION . . .
On Monday 10 February 2014 the BBC News England website, under the headline ‘UK floods: Datchet residents scramble to protect homes’ reported that ‘The village of Datchet, in the shadow of Windsor Castle, has been transformed into a watery scene’.
Some 48 hours later after the troops had been called in to support the civil powers, the army commander responsible for Datchet requested that a Village Meeting be called so that he could ensure the Datchet community could get the help and support it needed. His key point was the need for an interface between the community and his soldiers (and the other emergency services which came from far and wide) – how else could they know what help was needed?
This led to the formation of a volunteer group to provide the interface during the flood event and, as part of the post flood review, the formation a voluntary Community Action Group to assess and formulate plans such that the Village be better prepared for a future flood event – for a Village in the flood plain of the River Thames this seemed, even if only with the benefit of hindsight, so logical. This website has been put together by the volunteer Community Action Group as a first step in helping to make the Datchet Community aware of the issues and to point to helpful sources of advice on matters flooding.
